Pet Insurance Predicament - No Loss No Gain

Covering our diva dog's pre-existing conditions after being dropped from our pet insurance

If you're like the majority of Coloradans, you own a pet. If you're like our family, you have a high-maintenance diva dog who requires regular medication and veterinary intervention frequently. In our case, we were fortunate to purchase pet insurance when she was a puppy and have relied on that pet insurance to afford her bougie prescription canned food and apothecary of medications to keep her spunky.

Last fall, we were among the roughly 100,000 pet parents who received notice that our pet insurance was dropping our fur baby. Panicked, I went on the hunt for a new policy. Unfortunately, of the dozens of quotes I received, none would cover our girl's pre-existing conditions. I took to social media, reddit and our trusted vet angling for any lead to find a loophole.

Persistence paid off and we discovered said loophole with MetLife Pet Insurance called No Loss No Gain. The program is an extension of any coverage provided through this benefit provision below:

"Because your pet has current, active coverage with a different company, we will NOT apply the pre-existing condition exclusion for any specific illness or injury that was covered under their plan. NO OTHER pet insurance company will do this."

While I had acquired a quote from MetLife Pet Insurance that said pre-existing conditions would not be covered, the No Loss No Gain program is only offered over the phone with a licensed agent.

I called and MetLife Pet Insurance matched our current coverage, line-by-line. They covered every high-maintenance need of our diva dog and we're somehow saving money every month on premiums. This is huge for our family and after polling our neighbors, I know that other families are facing the same hurdles. While I am not gaining anything by publicizing MetLife Pet Insurance, I felt the responsibility to shout our experience from the mountain tops.

Are Pre-Existing Conditions Covered When Switching Pet Insurance Providers?

While MetLife Pet may not cover all pre-existing conditions, they can provide coverage for previously covered pre-existing conditions if a group benefits policyholder switches their coverage to MetLife Pet. If you’re looking to switch providers in this situation, rest assured you may be able to get reimbursed for MetLife Pet-covered expenses related to a pre-existing condition already covered under your current policy.

As I understand it, in order for your pet to be eligible for the No Loss No Gain program, you need to meet the following criteria:

Pet has active pet insurance policy

Pet parent must call to speak with an agent to write the plan

Licensed agents can be reached at 855-847-5540 to tailor a specific quote to your pet's needs and still fit your budget.

I hope this helps a fellow pet parent!
